Control Your Own Future: Living Wills
None of us are the naïve enough to think that we are going to live forever. Yet a large number of us fail of to plan for when our time comes. It is not morbid to plan ahead in this way, just sensible because you never know what may happen tomorrow, next year or in ten years time. If you have a family or dependents that would be lost without you, living wills are certainly something you need to put thought into.
What would happen to them if something happened to you? How would they cope with decisions that they may be forced into making for you? Everybody should be allowed to make the decisions that may affect their quality of life themselves, but all too often they are incapable of doing so. Only you should be able to choose when to end all pain and suffering, and with living wills you can do so. In short, a living will is an instruction regarding when to terminate your life. Many people cannot abide the thought of being a vegetable of being kept alive via life support machines. A living will instructs when the point of no return comes. It can also refuse intravenous feeding and resuscitation. Unfortunately, the law can overturn living wills in certain cases, especially if you are hospitalized at the time and none of the people present know about your wishes. By making everyone in your life that may be called upon to make decisions aware of your living will, you stand more chance of having your wishes acted upon. It may also be worth discussing with your doctor so that it can be declared on your medical records. Preparing for the future in this way may save heartache in the future.
You can draw up a living will by yourself, but it may be worth consulting a lawyer if you plan to make the document legal. Some states actually have living will forms that can be filled out to ensure that they are legally binding. You can look on the Internet for more information before committing yourself to anything. There are also downloadable forms that you can fill in. All is left then is to have it legally certified and your future is secure. You then have the peace of mind to get on with living the rest of your life to the full.
